Online Video Advertising Reaching 'Frenzy Point'

With the flood, comes the feast. Advertising dollars are pouring into online video. Some of the largest online video ad networks are seeing revenue growth accelerating this quarter, and expect the fourth quarter to be even bigger. “Last year we grew 40%, this year we are growing 90%,” says Keith Richman, CEO of Break Media. He expects Break’s total revenues in the third quarter, which include more than just video advertising, to be well above $10 million for the first time...

Comment: Let's hope that 'frenzy' is reflected in Blinkx's next results, due in November...

Not that there was any mention of Blinkx in that article - something I've already mailed the author about...

Acer Android tablet release date wobbles

Acer's expected Android-based tablet will come to challenge the iPad in Q1 2011 rather than Q4 2010, it has been alleged.

Notebook industry sources cited by DigiTimes made the claim, adding that the reason for the delay - if delay it truly is; we're not so sure - is Acer's decision to wait for Android 3.0.

Well Acer might wait: Android 3.0 will apparently add lots of tablet-friendly features to the Google OS...

£1 by Christmas?

One of the year's top performing stocks so far is video search engine Blinkx. It jumped a further 7p to 74.75p, and people in the know are confident that it will be trading above £1 before Christmas. Last month, Korea's Samsung Electronics selected Blinkx for participation in applications for Samsung phones.

Google plots pre-Christmas Chrome OS iPad killer

Google will have a spec-tastic, low-cost, possibly even free Chrome OS tablet in punters' hands a month before Christmas, it has been claimed.

And now the bad news: it's likely to be only available in the US, and if you want to get the tablet for a lot less than the iPad, you'll need to take out a Verizon data airtime deal.

Launch day, according a to an unnamed source cited by website Downloadsquad, will be Friday, 26 November, the day after Thanksgiving and a time when holidaying Yanks descend upon retail outlets in their droves.

According to the mole - if mole he be - HTC is making the hardware, which will use Nvidia's ARM-based Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip. It'll have 2GB of Ram - which is a lot for this kind of device, especially one with a cloud-centric OS - and 32GB of Flash storage, possibly expandable through memory cards, though that's not certain.

The display will be 1280 x 720, so well set for widescreen HD content. Navigation too, thanks to built-in GPS chippery, plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and - hence the Verizon link - 3G connectivity. It'll have a video conferencing camera too, the source says.

If said mole is correct, Google's gadget will come in ahead of a raft of tablets based on the online advertising giant's other OS, Android, which is expected to get all tablet-ready at the tail end of the year in its 3.0 release...

Video site Hulu brews IPO for the autumn

"Hulu could launch its initial public offering as early as autumn, the New York Times reports, with the firm consulting investment banks in a move that could value the video site at $2bn...

Brewing an IPO, Hulu may well also be holding back on investing in new market growth, focusing on maximising its advertising revenues. Hulu's 2009 revenue reportedly reached $100m, but profits are fairly small, give the popularity of the site in the US; hits including Glee, Family Guy and 30 Rock attracted 24m unique users during June."

from The Guardian

---------------
Comment: So if that's right, and the float goes ahead at that price, Hulu could be worth 20x sales.

So what is Blinxk worth then, with profits due to come in this financial year?

Anticipated Apple TV update seen as stepping stone for connected HDTV

This is interesting...

"Apple is expected to launch a new Apple TV in the coming months with limited storage, a lower price, and its own App Store, paving the way for an Internet-connected HDTV as soon as 2012.
...
When Apple can overcome the "primary" hurdles of set top boxes and live TV, Munster believes that is when the company will strike with an Internet-based iTunes TV pass for $50 to $90 per month. An App Store could also offer games, and services like Netflix and Hulu Plus, built right into the set..."

from AppleInsider

One thing's for sure - the whole iTV/TV-/Video-On-demand sector is reaching boiling point. Let's just hope Blinxk are right ion the middle of it...
"However, a new way of interacting with computers is on the verge of changing the way future generations interact with and experience personal computing. The multi-touch enabled devices are already beginning to proliferate: Apple sold 1 million multitouch-enabled iPads in 28 days. That’s 35,700 per day. Last quarter (Q1 2010) they sold 97,000 multitouch-enabled iPhones per day. In February, 2010 about 60,000 multitouch-enabled Android phones were being sold per day. Add that up and you are looking at 192,700 touch-based devices making it into consumers hands per day..."

from 52 weeks of UX

---------------

Comment: Is it my faulty memory playing tricks on me, or did Chandratillake say not so very long ago that he didn't think mobile phones/devices were that important to Blinkx...?

...and this...

Phasing out the Bing Search API 1.1

"The considerable benefits that come from moving to the newer API include:

New SourceTypes

* RelatedSearch - view searches that provide information in which you might be interested, based on your current search
* Instant Answer - get authoritative answers to questions, such as "What is 789*12?", "How many seconds are in a year?" as well as airline flight status.
* MobileWeb - Get mobile Web search results - primarily Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML) or Wireless Markup Language (WML) pages relevant to the queried term.
* Video - Get videos relevant to your search terms.
* Translation - Translate terms or small blocks of text from one language to another"

from Bing Community blog

-------------

Hmm, wonder who's doing their video search for them (or is it in-house)?

iPhone App Mania with Bing

"Since the launch of the Bing for Mobile iPhone app, we’ve heard some great feedback and are excited that Bing is showing up more and more as the search option for those using Safari on iOS4. We’re happy you are giving Bing a try and are enjoying some of the features like social, shopping, and the fresh homepage image every day..."

from Bing Community blog

--------------

Comment: Bit of a long shot here: but we know that Blinkx has a relationship with MSN UK, so wouldn't it be great if Microsoft built Cheep into their Bing app, so that users can take advantage of 'social, shopping' to share what they've bought...

And if not Microsoft, in my opinion that's the level of partner Blinxk needs for Cheep to quickly penetrate the market and get a critical mass of users...

_Only_ a ten-bagger?

To maximise your chances of achieving a 10-bagger in 10 years without throwing trying to hit every single ball for six, focus on smaller companies that have:

* strong balance sheets;
* strong cash flows; and
* strong growth prospects.

One such company could be Blinkx (LSE: BLNX.L - news) . According to Google Finance, this £170 million company "has an index of over 35 million hours of searchable video and more than 530 media partnerships, including national broadcasters, commercial media giants, and private video libraries".

Analysts at Daniel Stewart recently forecast 2012 revenues at Blinkx of £79.5 million and EPS of 4.5 pence, putting the company on a 2012 P/E of 13.7. This fast growing rising star of the UK internet industry is the type of company that could just turn out to be a 10-bagger in the years ahead...

from Motley Fool (via Yahoo Finance)

---------

Comment: Only a ten-bagger? Don't think so. If Blinxk comes anywhere close to achieving its potential should be much, MUCH more than that...

And anyway, a ten-bagger from which price-point? It's gone up to 60p+ from c.13p just since May!

RIM answers Apple iPad with...The BlackPad

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion is preparing to launch an iPad competitor in November, and it will be called the BlackPad, according to a report citing two people familiar with the company's plans.

Bloomberg reports that the RIM tablet will have roughly the same dimensions as the iPad, offer WiFi and Bluetooth, and give you the option of tapping the interwebs through the company's BlackBerry handsets...

from The Register

------------
Comment: And what RIM really needs is an app to feed business video news to the pad's users - a business Blinkx Beat, if you like (or a cheaper Reuters Insider)

I think we're going to see a slew of pads in the forthcoming months/years - Android, RIM, Win7 - and they're all gonna need compelling video apps to keep peole engaged.

Still mystified as to why Blinkx isn't on the Apple platforms, though (iPhone, iPad, iPod). Maybe all will become clear in time - but Blinkx being Blinkx I wouldn't bet on it...

Virgin Media complains to Ofcom about Project Canvas

Virgin Media has lodged a complaint with Ofcom, aimed at halting the BBC-backed video-on-demand service Project Canvas.

The cable giant says the project, which is developing common standards for net TV in the UK, is anti-competitive.

BT, Channel 4 and ITV are also partners.

It was given the green light in May, when the Office of Fair Trading ruled it was not a merger.

But Virgin Media said it could destroy the online TV market...
